Knowing How to Save a Marriage Saved Mine

how to save a marriageI never thought I’d be asking myself how to save a marriage.  I’ve been married for almost ten years now, and mostly it’s been a fairytale.  Imagine how completely devastated I was when I realized, not too long ago, that I needed to figure out how to save a marriage – my marriage.
On the day of my wedding, I was the happiest bride on Earth.  I knew I was marrying my best friend, and I knew that after that day, my life could only get better.  It was a fairytale wedding, and I was a fairytale bride.  The first few years were magical. How to save a marriage was certainly nowhere near my mind back then.  I gave birth to our first daughter a year after we got married and our two boys followed soon after.  Five years after saying “I do” we found ourselves with three children all under the age of five.  That’s a tall order, so I left my teaching job to be with the kids full time, and my husband concentrated on his career as a marketing executive.
I don’t know when our problems started exactly, and I can no longer remember when things started to change.  I think we just got busy – him with his work, me with the kids and all the housework.  It reached a point when we couldn’t even strike up a conversation anymore, one that didn’t involve the kids or the mortgage or the bills.  We used to talk about everything.  We used to talk about our hopes and our dreams, and it used to come so naturally.  Now we can barely say a few meaningful words to each other, and the silence doesn’t feel comfortable anymore.  During this trying period, I cried for weeks.  Who was I to know how to save a marriage?  I was certain my fairytale life was over.
I was pouring my heart out to one of my girlfriends over lunch, and she told me she’ll find a way to fix it.  I told her it was no use.  She didn’t know how to save a marriage because she wasn’t even married herself.  But she told me she’ll be damned if she sees this particular marriage go down the drain, because if a perfect couple like us ended up failing, what hope does that give the rest of them?  She was sweet to say that, but I was still not convinced.  That night, she called me and told me she had good news – she knew how to save a marriage.  I asked her how she knew, and to my utter disbelief she said “I googled it.”  That was such an absurd answer, it almost made me laugh.  But she wouldn’t stop nagging me and told me to stop moping, go online, and purchase this book called “Save the Marriage.”  I was skeptical at first, but I decided to try it out anyway.  What happened after that changed my life.  The book is quite simple, but it contains stuff I didn’t even realize before.  I knew I had nothing to lose, and I’ve already tried everything I knew anyway.  So I followed the book’s advice, and things started getting better.  I just wish I knew about how to save a marriage earlier, but if I learned one thing, it’s never too late.
